New Twitter Home Page Emphasizes Interests

Twitter has launched a new home page design that the company says should be visible to all users now. Sure enough, I logged out and there it was.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the new home page is less cluttered and instead focuses on a single statement: “Follow your interests.” Gone are trending topics and top tweets, as well as the recently added “Discover Twitter” video.

Twitter has struggled to educate and convert non-users about its value. The new home page messaging explains that Twitter provides

Instant updates from your friends, industry experts, favorite celebrities, and what’s happening around the world.

Twitter is still featuring certain users on its home page, though in a much less obvious way than before. The “See who’s here” content block has been replaced by a horizontal row of avatars that seems to stretch out forever, with a single avatar changing every few seconds. I suspect new users won’t immediately pick up on what this is all about, even with the presence of avatars from CBS, BBC, Ellen Degeneres and other popular accounts.

The new home page does tie-in with yesterday’s news that Twitter has improved its search capabilities to help users find new accounts based on common interests.
